Ware Jackson helps Houstonian avoid eviction (pro bono)
Ware Jackson partner Avery Sheppard and associate Kiara Gradney volunteered their services through Houston Volunteer Lawyers and represented an indigent Houstonian pro bono. The client found herself unemployed, behind on rent, and facing eviction with her minor daughter in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. When Avery and Kiara took on the case in August, the landlord was attempting self-eviction by shutting off the client’s air conditioning. Avery and Kiara immediately filed a writ of restoration and got the air conditioning turned back on, then negotiated a deal with the landlord in which all alleged past-due rent and penalties were waived in return for the client moving out. The deal also resulted in the return of client funds from the court registry, which the client used to pay for new housing. The client was able to return to her job not long after.
