Matt Welsh

Matt Welsh graduated cum laude from the University of Houston Law Center where he was a Notes and Comments Editor for the Houston Law Review. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration in Supply Chain Management and his Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma in 2019. Matt worked at Ware Jackson as a summer associate in 2022 and then as a law clerk during his third year of law school before joining the firm as an associate.

While attending law school, Matt gained experience as an intern for the Hon. Dena Palermo, where he assisted in drafting opinions and observed cases and mediations before the Court. Matt also participated in the Appellate Civil Rights Clinic at the UH Law Center, where he drafted a memorandum on Monell claims in the Fifth Circuit and portions of an appellant’s brief for an appeal concerning First Amendment rights on social media.

As a summer associate and law clerk for Ware Jackson, Matt drafted motions for summary and default judgment, demand letters, and deposition summaries. He also assisted attorneys and wrote research memoranda on issues such as section 1983 claims, government-employee qui tam suits, federal appellate procedure, discovery rule applications, and penalty clauses.

As a student at the UH Law Center, Matt was a teaching assistant for Prof. Gomez’s Lawyering Skills & Strategies I & II classes. He was also a member of the Houston Law Review. His Note, Sorry Losers And Haters: How Current Public Forum Analysis of Twitter Posts Allows for Silence of Dissent and Violations of Rights, was published in May 2023. The Note won the award for the Best Overall Paper Written for the Houston Law Review and also won the UH Law Center Writing Competition Award for Best Paper on Civil Liberties.

Matt is a native Houstonian who spends his free time woodworking, spending time with family, watching the Astros, and playing Boomer Sooner on repeat.
